Compliance is non-negotiable due to food safety risks. You must verify that the products meet FDA (USA) or Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 (EU) standards. Specifically, request lab test reports for Lead and Cadmium leaching (ISO 6486-1). If you are selling in California, ensure the products are Prop 65 compliant. Always ask for a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) from the supplier to ensure the decals do not contain toxic heavy metals.

Request samples to perform a 'Knife Scratch Test' and a 'Microwave Thermal Shock Test'. The decal should show no signs of peeling or fading after repeated high-temperature cycles. Check for glaze consistency; there should be no pinholes, bubbles, or 'orange peel' textures. For custom designs, ensure the supplier uses high-resolution printing (300+ DPI) to avoid pixelation on the ceramic surface.

Porcelain plates are ideal for fine dining due to their elegant finish, while Stoneware is better suited for casual dining or rustic themes due to its chip-resistant nature. For high-traffic environments like hotels, look for reinforced edges to minimize breakage. Ensure the plates are rated for thermal shock resistance (typically up to 180°C) to handle the transition from cold storage to hot ovens.

Ceramics are fragile, so packaging specifications are vital. Require the supplier to use 5-layer corrugated export cartons with customized EPE foam or molded pulp inserts. For bulk shipments, insist on palletization with plastic wrap and corner protectors. It is highly recommended to include a clause in the contract for a breakage allowance (usually 2-3%), where the supplier compensates for any damage exceeding this threshold.

Focus on Tiered Pricing based on decal complexity. A single-color decal is significantly cheaper than a full-wrap multi-color design. Negotiate for lower MOQs on stock shapes while customizing only the decal. To ensure transaction security, use secured payment terms and consider hiring a third-party inspection service (like V-Trust or SGS) to conduct a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) focusing on AQL 2.5/4.0 standards.

Be aware that certain regions, particularly the EU and Brazil, have historically imposed anti-dumping duties on ceramic tableware originating from specific countries. Always check the HS Code (typically 6911.10) against your local customs tariff schedule. Work with suppliers who can provide a Certificate of Origin (CO) to help you benefit from preferential trade agreements if applicable.

If you are providing custom artwork for the decals, sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before sharing high-resolution files. Ensure the purchase order explicitly states that the intellectual property of the design belongs to the buyer and that the supplier is prohibited from selling your specific design to other clients or displaying it in their public showroom without permission.
