The core of cold room efficiency lies in the Polyurethane (PU) sandwich panels. For standard chillers (0°C to +5°C), a thickness of 100mm is sufficient, but for deep freezers (-18°C to -25°C), you must use at least 150mm or 200mm panels to prevent thermal leakage. Ensure the panels have a B1 or B2 fire retardant rating and utilize a cam-lock connection system for airtight sealing and easy assembly.

You must match the cooling capacity to your specific volume and product type. Prioritize Bitzer or Copeland compressors for their global reputation for reliability and ease of finding spare parts. For energy efficiency, choose units with Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) technology. Ensure the evaporator is equipped with an automatic defrosting system (electric or hot gas) to prevent ice buildup on the coils.

For food and pharmaceutical storage, the facility must meet HACCP and GMP standards. Ensure the interior surfaces are food-grade stainless steel or color-coated galvanized steel that is easy to sanitize. For international markets, verify that the electrical components carry CE, UL, or RoHS certifications to ensure safety and regulatory alignment.

The design varies significantly between Processing Rooms (where people work, requiring higher airflow and moderate temps) and Storage Warehouses (high-density racking). If the room is for high-traffic use, specify heavy-duty sliding doors with air curtains or PVC strip curtains to minimize temperature fluctuations during frequent entry and exit.

Cold room panels are bulky and prone to denting. Require the supplier to use reinforced wooden crate packaging or specialized steel frames for shipping. Before final payment, hire a third-party inspector to conduct a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) to verify panel density (should be 40-42kg/m³) and compressor authenticity.

Focus on the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the initial price. Negotiate for a longer warranty period (e.g., 2 years on the compressor) and request a spare parts kit (including sensors, expansion valves, and door gaskets) to be included in the bulk price. This reduces long-term maintenance costs significantly.

Since sending engineers abroad is expensive, ensure the supplier provides detailed 3D installation drawings and video tutorials. Confirm that the supplier offers remote technical support via video call. For large-scale projects, check if the supplier has local partners or authorized service centers in your country for emergency repairs.

Refrigeration units often contain refrigerant gases (like R404a or R134a), which are classified as hazardous or regulated under environmental protocols. Check if your country allows the import of these gases; if not, request the supplier to ship the unit pre-charged with nitrogen and purchase the refrigerant locally. Ensure all HS Codes are correctly classified to avoid customs delays.
