The adhesive backing is a critical failure point. You should specify the use of high-tack acrylic or 3M equivalent pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA). Request data on peel strength (N/25mm) and shear resistance. For outdoor or automotive applications, ensure the adhesive is UV-resistant and moisture-proof to prevent delamination over time.

For the US and EU markets, EPDM products must be RoHS and REACH compliant to ensure they are free from hazardous substances. If used in the automotive or construction sectors, look for UL 94 (flame retardancy, specifically HF-1 or V-0 ratings) and ASTM D1056 standards. For drinking water applications, NSF/ANSI 61 certification is a prerequisite.

EPDM is prized for its ozone and weather resistance. Ask suppliers for accelerated aging test reports (ISO 188) and ozone resistance tests (ASTM D1149). A high-quality EPDM strip should show no cracking or significant loss of tensile strength after exposure to 50 pphm ozone concentration for 72 hours.

Some low-cost suppliers blend EPDM with recycled rubber or PVC to reduce costs, which severely compromises UV resistance. To prevent this, request a material infrared spectroscopy (IR) report and perform a compression set test; pure EPDM should have a compression set of less than 25% after 22 hours at 70°C.

Focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for free tooling/die-cutting molds for custom profiles if the order exceeds a certain volume.
