Key technical factors include particle size (must be <50μm to avoid irritation), sterility assurance levels, and the stability of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in a petrolatum or water-free base. Always verify the viscosity to ensure proper ocular retention time.

As a medical product, the supplier must possess a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certificate. For entry into specific markets, look for FDA approval (USA), CE marking (Europe), or NMPA registration (China). Additionally, the manufacturer should hold ISO 13485 (Medical Devices - Quality Management Systems) to ensure consistent production quality.

The packaging must be tamper-evident and typically consists of collapsible aluminum or specialized plastic tubes. Ensure the nozzle is designed for precise dosage and prevents backflow contamination. The internal lining of the tube must be chemically inert to prevent reactions with the ointment base or medication.

Eye ointments are primarily used for nocturnal treatment due to their long residence time. Functional categories include antibiotic ointments (e.g., Erythromycin) for infections, anti-inflammatory (steroidal) for post-surgery, and lubricating/moisturizing ointments for severe dry eye syndrome. Ensure the product function aligns with your target medical application.

The biggest risks are regulatory seizure and temperature excursions. Medical products are strictly scrutinized by customs; ensure all Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are included. Since high temperatures can cause phase separation in ointments, consider temperature-controlled shipping (Cold Chain) if transiting through tropical regions.

Prioritize Audited Suppliers who have undergone third-party onsite inspections. Check their Business License to confirm their scope includes 'Medical Instruments' or 'Pharmaceuticals.' Request a video audit of their sterile filling line and ask for historical export data to your specific country to ensure they understand your local import regulations.

Focus negotiations on batch consistency and shelf-life. Request a minimum of 80% remaining shelf-life upon arrival. For large volumes, negotiate tiered pricing based on annual volume rather than a single order, and insist on pre-shipment inspection rights by agencies like SGS or Intertek to verify sterility and quantity.

Use secure payment terms such as Letter of Credit (L/C) or escrow services provided by reputable platforms. Never transfer funds to personal accounts. Ensure the Proforma Invoice (PI) explicitly states the batch number, manufacturing date, and expiration date. Include a clause for product recalls or returns if the goods fail third-party lab testing upon arrival.
