Specifically, verify the HIN (Hull Identification Number) format and ensure the manufacturer provides a Declaration of Conformity. For safety, the boat must meet ISO 12217 for stability and buoyancy and ISO 11105 for ventilation of petrol engine compartments.

Request a material data sheet (MDS) from the supplier to confirm the use of marine-grade fiberglass (E-glass) and high-performance resins like vinylester, which provides superior water resistance compared to standard polyester. Ask for Barcol hardness test results on the finished hull to ensure the resin has cured correctly, and check for void-free lamination through ultrasonic testing or detailed high-resolution photos of the bilge and transom areas.

A reputable supplier should provide OEM/ODM services, including modifications to the deck layout, integration of specific navigation electronics (e.g., Garmin or Simrad), and choices in upholstery materials (marine-grade vinyl with UV inhibitors). Additionally, confirm if they can pre-install outboard engine mounting plates or specialized fishing/diving equipment to reduce local assembly costs.

The biggest risks are structural stress cracks and surface scratches during transit. To mitigate this, insist on custom steel cradles for shipping and use shrink-wrap protection with moisture vents. Ensure the shipment is covered by All-Risk Marine Insurance and clarify the Incoterms; CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) is common, but FOB (Free On Board) allows the buyer more control over the specialized carrier selection.

Focus on staged payment terms, such as 30% deposit, 40% after hull molding, and 30% after final inspection and sea trials. Negotiate for spare parts kits (gelcoat repair kits, extra cleats, and gaskets) to be included at no cost. For long-term partnerships, request a price protection clause against fluctuations in raw material costs like resin and glass fiber.

Hire a certified marine surveyor to conduct a sea trial and a static inspection. The inspection must include a watertight integrity test (hose test) on all hatches and windows, a functional test of all electrical systems, and a check of the fuel system grounding.
