A Float Shoe is installed at the bottom of the casing string to guide it into the wellbore, while a Float Collar is placed one or two joints above to provide a seat for cementing plugs. For critical high-pressure wells, using both in tandem provides a double-barrier system to prevent cement backflow.

For wells containing H2S or CO2, specify CRA (Corrosion Resistant Alloy) or L80/P110 grade steel bodies. The internal valve components should be made of high-strength phenolic resin or aerospace-grade aluminum to ensure they are both durable during pumping and easily drillable afterward.

Use Plunger-type valves for standard vertical wells due to their reliable sealing. For high-angle or horizontal wells, Spring-loaded valves are preferred to ensure the valve closes regardless of gravity. In cases where the casing must fill automatically while running in hole, select Auto-Fill Float Equipment to reduce surge pressure on the formation.

Always request API 5CT and API 10F licenses. You should verify these credentials directly on the API composite list. For large orders, it is highly recommended to hire a third-party inspection agency (like SGS or Intertek) to perform a 'witness test' of the valve's back-pressure seal before the goods leave the factory.

The main risks are surface corrosion and thread damage. Ensure the supplier uses heavy-duty thread protectors and applies anti-rust grease to all exposed metal. For sea freight, equipment should be packed in fumigated wooden crates with moisture-absorbent silica gel to prevent 'container rain' damage.

Focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for extended warranties (18 months from shipment) and ask for a spare parts kit (extra O-rings or springs) to be included. If sourcing via Made-in-China.com, look for 'Diamond Members' or 'Audited Suppliers' to ensure a higher level of business legitimacy.

Be aware of Anti-Dumping Duties (ADD) that some countries (like the US or EU) may place on Chinese steel products. Check the HS Code (typically 8431.43) against your local customs tariff schedule. Ensure the Certificate of Origin is accurately prepared to benefit from any existing Free Trade Agreements (FTA).
