Sourcing decisions depend on your target market's ethics and budget. Faux Fur (Synthetic) is typically made from Acrylic or Polyester fibers, offering high durability, machine washability, and lower costs. Real Fur (Natural), such as rabbit or mink, provides superior thermal insulation and a luxury tactile experience but requires specialized cleaning and higher maintenance. For most cross-border e-commerce retailers, high-weight (GSM) Faux Fur is preferred due to fewer import restrictions.

The primary indicator of quality is the GSM (Grams per Square Meter); a premium blanket should range between 300 to 600 GSM. Additionally, check the pile height (longer piles look more luxurious but may shed more) and the backing material, which is often Sherpa, Fleece, or Micro-mink to prevent slipping and increase warmth. Ensure the supplier uses colorfastness grade 4 or higher to prevent dye transfer.

For the US market, products must comply with the Flammable Fabrics Act (16 CFR Part 1610). For the EU, ensure the blankets meet REACH regulations regarding harmful azo dyes and lead content. If sourcing real fur, you must provide a CITES certificate or proof that the species is not endangered. For all textiles, an OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification is highly recommended to guarantee the absence of harmful substances.

Request a shedding test report or a sample to perform a 'pull test' manually. High-quality manufacturers use advanced knitting techniques to lock fibers into the base fabric. You should also verify the shrinkage rate, which should not exceed 3-5% after the first wash. Ask for third-party inspection reports (SGS or Intertek) focusing on seam strength and fiber loss.

The biggest risk is Customs Seizure due to mislabeling of materials (e.g., real fur labeled as faux). Always ensure the Material Composition Label is accurate and sewn into the product. Another risk is Vacuum Packaging Damage; while vacuum sealing reduces shipping costs, leaving blankets compressed for too long can permanently crease the pile. Instruct suppliers to use moisture-proof desiccant bags to prevent mold during sea freight.

Focus on Tiered Pricing based on volume; for example, a 15-20% discount is standard when moving from 100 to 1,000 units. Negotiate for OEM services like custom woven labels or branded ribbons, which add value for a low cost. For payment, use Trade Messenger to document all agreements and insist on Secure Payment terms to protect your funds until the goods are shipped.

Since blankets are high-volume but relatively low-weight, they are subject to Dimensional Weight (Volumetric Weight) charges. Sea Freight (LCL) is the most economical for large orders, but ensure the supplier uses high-compression packing to minimize volume. For smaller trial orders, Sea-to-Door (DDP) services are often more cost-effective than traditional Air Express (DHL/FedEx) because they include customs clearance and duties.
