Safety is paramount for overhead glazing. You must specify Tempered Laminated Glass (typically 10mm+1.52PVB+10mm or thicker). The PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) or SGP (SentryGlas Plus) interlayer is crucial because it holds glass fragments together if breakage occurs. For high-wind or heavy-snow regions, SGP interlayers are preferred as they offer five times the tear strength and 100 times the rigidity of standard PVB.

Suppliers must provide certifications that align with international building codes. Look for ANSI Z97.1 (USA), EN 12600/EN 12150 (EU), or AS/NZS 2208 (Oceania). Additionally, ensure the stainless steel hardware (spigots, tension rods, or spiders) is Grade 304 for indoor/mild outdoor use or Grade 316 for coastal environments to prevent corrosion.

The mounting system determines the structural load distribution. Point-supported systems (Spider fittings) offer a modern aesthetic but require precise glass drilling and structural steel support. Wall-mounted aluminum channels provide a minimalist 'floating' look but require a solid concrete substrate for anchoring. Always request load-bearing calculation reports from the supplier to ensure the design can withstand local wind and snow loads.

To reduce maintenance costs, specify Self-cleaning (Hydrophobic) coating, which allows rainwater to wash away dirt. For energy efficiency or aesthetic control, consider Fritted Glass (ceramic silk-screen) to provide shading and reduce glare, or Low-E coatings if the canopy is part of a thermal envelope.

Glass is highly fragile. Insist on customized plywood crates (non-fumigation) with cork spacers between each glass sheet. Ensure the supplier uses steel strapping to secure crates within the container. It is highly recommended to purchase All-Risk Marine Insurance and include a clause for 'concealed damage' discovered within 7 days of arrival.

Focus on Quality Control (QC) milestones rather than just price. Negotiate a payment structure linked to inspection: for example, 30% deposit, 70% after a successful third-party inspection (like SGS or TUV) before the container is sealed. Ask for a 5-10 year warranty against delamination of the laminated glass, as this is a common long-term defect.

Verify dimensional tolerances (typically +/- 2mm), edge polishing quality, and the absence of bubbles or impurities in the interlayer. Most importantly, check the alignment of pre-drilled holes; even a 1mm offset can make a glass canopy impossible to install on-site, leading to a total loss of the component.

Check your country's HS Code (typically 7007.21 for laminated safety glass) for specific tariffs. Be aware of anti-dumping duties that some regions (like the EU or USA) may impose on Chinese glass. Ensure the supplier provides a Certificate of Origin and a detailed Packing List to avoid delays at customs.
