Request samples to test for darkness consistency (blackness) and point strength. A premium lead should offer low wear-off rates, meaning it lasts longer between sharpenings. For industrial or artistic use, check the lightfastness to ensure the graphite does not fade over time when exposed to UV light.

HB and 2B leads are the standard for general writing and standardized testing (OMR sheets). Softer leads (4B-9B) are preferred for artistic shading and sketching due to their high graphite content, while harder leads (H-9H) are utilized in technical drawing and lithography where precision and thin lines are paramount.

The most significant risk is physical breakage during transit due to the brittle nature of graphite. Ensure the supplier uses shock-absorbent inner packaging and reinforced outer cartons. Another risk is moisture absorption, which can affect the bonding agents in the lead; always specify the use of desiccants and moisture-proof pallets.

Focus on Tiered Pricing based on volume; for orders exceeding 50,000 units, you can typically negotiate a 10-20% discount. Request a Quality Assurance Agreement (QAA) that defines the acceptable 'breakage rate' per batch.
