Safety is paramount in automotive sourcing. You must verify that the fabric meets FMVSS 302 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) or ISO 3795 for flammability resistance. Additionally, ensure the materials are REACH or OEKO-TEX certified to guarantee they are free from harmful VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that can cause 'new car smell' toxicity.

The longevity of a headliner depends on the bond between the fabric and the roof board. Request high-temperature resistance data, as car interiors can reach 80°C (176°F) in direct sunlight. The fabric backing must be compatible with spray-grade contact cements or heat-activated adhesives to prevent sagging or delamination over time.

Furthermore, check the elongation and recovery rates; a good headliner fabric should have a 4-way stretch capability to mold perfectly around complex curves, sunroof openings, and pillars without wrinkling.

Headliner fabric is highly susceptible to permanent creasing. Insist that the supplier ships the fabric in rolls on heavy-duty cardboard tubes, rather than folding it. Each roll should be vacuum-sealed in waterproof plastic and placed in a reinforced outer carton to prevent moisture absorption and physical compression during sea freight.

Focus on Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site inspections by third-party agencies like SGS or TÜV Rheinland. Review their Trade Analysis to see if they have experience exporting to your specific region, and prioritize those who provide detailed material safety data sheets (MSDS) and flame retardant test reports.

In the textile industry, slight color shifts between batches are common. To avoid this, request a 'Golden Sample' from the current production run and include a clause in your contract stating that the bulk order must achieve a Grayscale rating of 4 or higher compared to the approved sample. For large projects, try to source the entire quantity from a single dye lot.
