Compliance is often dictated by cemetery regulations and local government standards. You must verify that the supplier can provide CAD drawings that match the specific size, thickness, and finish requirements (e.g., polished, honed, or pitched) of the destination country. For the US market, ensure the stone meets ASTM C615 standards for granite dimension stone.

Inquire about the supplier's CNC carving capabilities and sandblasting precision. For detailed portraits, laser etching is preferred for its high resolution. Ensure the supplier uses high-quality litho-chrome paint or gold leaf gilding that is UV-resistant to prevent fading. Ask for a pre-assembly photo of the headstone and base to check for color consistency across the entire monument.

Since headstones are extremely heavy, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is heavily influenced by logistics. You should prioritize suppliers located near major ports like Xiamen (the world's stone hub) to reduce inland transit costs. Calculate the container utilization rate; typically, a 20ft container is used for stone to meet weight limits (approx. 21-27 tons) rather than volume limits.

The biggest risks are breakage during transit and material substitution. To mitigate these, insist on fumigated solid wood crates with internal foam padding and iron strapping. Always request a Material Test Report (MTR) to ensure the 'Absolute Black' or 'Blue Pearl' granite is natural and not chemically dyed, which will peel after a few years.

Focus on long-term volume commitments rather than one-off orders to secure better pricing. Negotiate for free samples of small stone slabs to verify color and grain. Ask for a 'Dry-Lay' inspection, where the supplier lays out all pieces of a large order on the factory floor for photo/video approval before packing to ensure vein matching and color uniformity.

Use Trade Assurance or Letters of Credit (L/C) for large orders to ensure payment is only released upon proof of shipment. Given the weight, FOB (Free On Board) is often preferred so you can control the ocean freight through your own forwarder. Ensure the Bill of Lading accurately reflects the weight to avoid overweight penalties at the destination port.
