Safety is paramount for staircases. You should request anti-slip treatments such as sandblasted strips, fluted grooves, or acid-washed finishes on the leading edge of the tread. Ensure the product complies with ASTM C1028 or local slip-resistance standards. For public projects, verify that the COF (Coefficient of Friction) meets the minimum requirement of 0.6 for level surfaces and 0.8 for ramps/stairs.

Marble is a natural product with inherent variations. To ensure a professional finish, require the supplier to perform a dry-lay inspection at the factory. This involves laying out the cut-to-size pieces to check for vein matching (book-matching) and color uniformity. Request high-resolution photos or videos of the dry-lay before the goods are packed and shipped.

Specify the edge profile clearly—options include bullnose, half-bullnose, mitered joint, or eased edges. For risers, confirm if they require back-side calibration to ensure a uniform thickness, which simplifies the installation process. Always provide a detailed cutting list (Shop Drawings) in CAD format to avoid dimensional errors.

The biggest risk is breakage due to improper crating. Ensure the supplier uses strong, fumigated solid wood crates with internal foam padding and corner protectors. For 'Cut-to-Size' projects, each piece should be numbered according to the installation map to prevent confusion and mishandling at the destination.

Look for Audited Suppliers who have undergone third-party inspections by SGS, TÜV Rheinland, or Bureau Veritas. Check their export history and specifically look for experience in large-scale construction projects. Requesting a factory video tour via the platform can help verify their processing machinery and quality control capabilities.

Negotiate based on yield rates and waste management. Suppliers often offer better pricing if you allow for standardized sizes rather than bespoke dimensions. For large volumes, aim for a 10-15% discount on the square meter price, but never compromise on the selection of the block, as lower prices often mean more color variation or structural defects.

Beyond the standard Invoice and Packing List, you must obtain a Fumigation Certificate for the wooden packaging to pass customs. Depending on your country, a Certificate of Origin may be required to benefit from preferential tariffs. Ensure the HS Code (typically 6802) is correctly declared to avoid delays and fines.
