Millberry copper

Millberry Copper is the highest grade of copper scrap, defined by ISRI (Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries) code 'Barley'. It must consist of No. 1 bare, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire, not smaller than No. 16 B & S wire gauge. It should be free of brittle burnt wire, lead, tin, or iron attachments, and must maintain a copper content of 99.9% minimum.

Buyers should demand a Chemical Analysis Report (SGS or CCIC). Key elements to check include the Copper (Cu) percentage (should be ≥99.9%) and the absence of impurities like Oxygen, Phosphorus, or Lead. For large-scale industrial use, ensure the material is free from insulation, grease, and oxidation (green patina), as these significantly affect the smelting yield.

Due to its high purity, it is primarily used for remelting and manufacturing new electrical conductors, high-quality copper cathodes, and electronic components. It is a critical raw material for wire and cable factories, foundries, and alloy manufacturers who require low-impurity feedstock to maintain electrical conductivity standards.

Suppliers should ideally hold ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) certifications. Since copper scrap is a regulated waste/resource, verify if the supplier has an AQSIQ license (for shipments to China) or equivalent export permits from their local environmental agency to ensure the material is not classified as hazardous waste.

Copper scrap is a high-value commodity prone to fraud. Never pay 100% upfront via T/T. Use Letter of Credit (L/C at sight) or Escrow services provided by reputable platforms like Made-in-China.com. Be wary of prices significantly below the LME (London Metal Exchange) spot price, as Millberry usually trades at 90-95% of the LME copper price; anything lower is a major red flag for 'sand-filled' containers or non-delivery.

Request third-party inspection (SGS/Bureau Veritas) at the loading port to verify weight and quality before the final payment. Ensure the Bill of Lading (B/L) matches the packing list exactly. For shipping, use FOB (Free On Board) terms if you have a reliable freight forwarder, or CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) only if the supplier provides a verifiable insurance policy covering 110% of the cargo value.

Since copper prices fluctuate daily, negotiate a pricing formula based on the LME index rather than a fixed price. Agree on a 'Price Fixing' date (e.g., the date of the Bill of Lading). This protects both parties from sudden market shifts during the transit period.

Check your country's HS Code classification (typically 7404.00) and associated import duties. Ensure the supplier provides a Certificate of Origin, a Clean Report of Findings, and a Radiation-Free Certificate, as many customs authorities strictly monitor metal scrap for radioactive contamination.
