The choice depends on the stored medium. For standard petroleum, carbon steel (Q235B or Q345B) is common but requires internal epoxy coatings and external anti-corrosive painting. For chemical-grade oils or high-moisture environments, 304 or 316L stainless steel is preferred. For underground use, SF Double-layer tanks (Steel-reinforced Fiberglass) are the industry standard to prevent leaks and environmental contamination.

Safety is paramount in oil storage. Ensure the tank includes emergency pressure relief vents, automatic overfill protection valves, and flame arrestors. For large-scale installations, a leak detection system (interstitial monitoring) for double-wall tanks is critical. Additionally, verify the seismic design category if the tank will be installed in earthquake-prone regions.

Determine the nominal volume vs. working volume; usually, the working volume is 85-90% of the total capacity to allow for thermal expansion. Request a Weld Procedure Specification (WPS) and Radiographic Testing (RT) reports for all major seams. It is highly recommended to hire a third-party inspection agency (like SGS or Intertek) to perform a pre-shipment inspection, focusing on vacuum leak tests and ultrasonic thickness measurements.

Oil tanks are often Out of Gauge (OOG) cargo. Small tanks can fit in 40HC or Flat Rack containers, but large tanks require Breakbulk shipping. Ensure the supplier provides a detailed professional lashing and bracing plan to prevent structural deformation during sea transit. Confirm the Incoterms clearly; CIF or DAP are often preferred for buyers who want the supplier to handle complex heavy-lift logistics.

Given the high capital value, avoid 100% upfront payments. A standard B2B structure is 30% deposit, 60% after production/inspection, and 10% upon arrival or bill of lading release.
