For oil-based ointments, verify the melting point to ensure the product remains stable during transit through different climate zones.

Compliance is non-negotiable. Suppliers must adhere to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards. Depending on the target market, look for FDA registration (USA), CE marking or CPNP notification (EU), or TGA approval (Australia). Additionally, ensure the packaging complies with ISO 22716 for cosmetics or relevant pharmacopeia standards (USP/BP/EP) for medicinal ointments.

Request a full Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to identify potential allergens or hazardous components. Verify that the base (e.g., petrolatum, lanolin, or synthetic polymers) is medical-grade. For 'natural' claims, check for ISO 16128 certifications. It is critical to confirm the preservative system used to prevent bacterial growth, especially if the ointment contains water-based extracts.

Ointments are sensitive to light and air. Prioritize aluminum tubes or airless pump bottles to prevent oxidation. If purchasing in bulk drums, ensure they are food-grade or pharmaceutical-grade HDPE with airtight seals. The packaging must be compatible with the formula to avoid leaching of chemicals from the container into the product.

The biggest risks are customs seizure due to unregistered ingredients and product degradation during shipping. Ointments can separate or liquefy in high temperatures. To mitigate this, use temperature-controlled shipping (Reefer containers) and ensure all HS Codes are correctly classified to avoid delays at the border.

Focus on batch consistency and lead times. Negotiate a staged payment plan where the final 30-50% is paid only after a third-party pre-shipment inspection (like SGS or Intertek) confirms the batch meets the agreed-upon COA specs. Ask for tiered pricing based on volume, but never sacrifice quality for a lower price in this category.

Always use secure payment methods provided by the platform to ensure escrow protection. Before placing a large order, request a paid sample from the actual production line, not a 'showroom sample.' Verify the supplier's Business License and Production Permit directly on the platform to ensure they are a manufacturer and not a middleman.

Be aware of import duties and medical device excise taxes in your country. For shipping, ensure the supplier provides a Non-Hazardous Chemical Declaration if applicable, to speed up air freight. For sea freight, ensure the pallets are fumigated (ISPM 15) and the cargo is placed away from heat sources on the vessel.
