Additionally, ensure the supplier provides ISO 1496-1 certification for general cargo containers and ISO 6346 for coding and identification. If shipping to specific regions, verify TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) convention compliance for customs-sealed transit and UIC 592 for rail transport compatibility.

Request the Maximum Gross Weight (MGW) and Payload capacity data sheets. Standard 20ft Open Tops usually handle up to 28,000kg - 30,480kg. Check the number and strength of internal lashing rings; high-quality units should have at least 10-12 rings rated for 1,500kg to 2,000kg each to prevent cargo shifting. These containers are specifically designed for over-height cargo or items that cannot be loaded through standard doors, such as large glass sheets, heavy machinery, boilers, or bulk minerals. The most significant risk is structural fatigue in 'Used' or 'Refurbished' units being sold as 'Cargo Worthy.' Always request a recent CSC inspection report and high-resolution photos of the corner castings and floor joists. Another risk is non-compliance with wood treatment regulations (ISPM 15) for the flooring, which can lead to customs rejection and heavy fines.

Focus on Total Landed Cost rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for volume-based discounts (typically 5-10% for orders over 10 units) and ask for free branding/logo painting. Request extended warranty periods on the tarpaulin and seals. It is also effective to negotiate flexible Incoterms, such as FOB (Free On Board), to maintain control over your own ocean freight costs.

Utilize Secured Payment services provided by the platform to ensure funds are only released upon proof of shipment. For large batches, hire a third-party inspection agency (like SGS or BV) to conduct a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) to verify the quantity, dimensions, and CSC plate validity before the final balance is paid.

Shipping empty containers is expensive due to volume. The most economical method is 'One-Way Leasing' or 'Cabotage,' where a shipping line uses your container to move cargo to your destination, effectively eliminating or significantly reducing your freight costs. Alternatively, if buying multiple units, they can be nested or stacked if the design allows, though this is more common for Flat Racks than Open Tops.
