Pet food is often high in fats and oils. You must specify the use of grease-proof inner layers (typically Cast Polypropylene or RCPP) to prevent staining and leakage. Additionally, incorporating a one-way degassing valve is crucial for products that release gases, while high-integrity heat seals are necessary to lock in the aroma, which is vital for pet palatability.

To achieve high-fidelity graphics, Rotogravure printing is recommended for large runs (over 10,000 units) as it supports up to 10 colors with extreme precision. For a premium tactile feel, consider soft-touch matte finishes, spot UV coating, or holographic foils. Ensure the supplier uses eco-friendly soy-based inks to align with modern sustainability trends in the pet industry.

Always prioritize Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site inspections by third-party agencies like SGS, Bureau Veritas, or TÜV Rheinland. Request a Production Monitoring service or a Pre-shipment Inspection (PSI) to verify that the film thickness and seal strength meet your specific requirements before the balance payment is made.

Focus on the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for free cylinder/plate making for long-term contracts or high-volume orders, which can save thousands of dollars in setup costs. Ask for a tiered pricing structure where the unit price drops significantly as you move from 10,000 to 50,000 units, and request 5-10% extra units to account for potential wastage during your automated filling process.

Ensure the supplier provides a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Food Grade Compliance Declarations (e.g., REACH or FDA). Be aware of Anti-Dumping Duties that some countries impose on specific plastic products from overseas. Clearly define Incoterms (e.g., CIF vs. DDP) in the contract to clarify who is responsible for import duties and local delivery to your warehouse.

Packaging bags are susceptible to puncturing and compression. Insist on heavy-duty corrugated export cartons and palletization with stretch wrap and edge protectors. For sea freight, request desiccant silica gel packs inside the containers to prevent 'container rain' (condensation) from damaging the paper components or causing mold on the pallets during long transit times.
