Buyers must evaluate the Melt Flow Index (MFI) to ensure compatibility with their injection molding or extrusion machinery. Additionally, check the Vicat Softening Temperature to determine heat resistance and the Tensile Strength to ensure the material meets the structural requirements of the end product. For HIPS, the Izod Impact Strength is the critical metric for durability.

If the product is for food contact, it must comply with FDA (US) or EC 1935/2004 (EU) regulations. For electronic housing, UL 94 flame retardancy ratings (such as V-0 or V-2) are essential. General environmental compliance requires RoHS and REACH certifications to ensure the absence of hazardous substances like heavy metals or restricted phthalates.

Virgin PS offers the highest clarity and mechanical stability. If opting for Recycled PS (rPS) to meet sustainability goals, ensure the supplier provides a Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification. Request batch-specific testing for impurities and color consistency, as recycled lots can vary significantly in processability compared to 100% virgin resin.

Polystyrene is a petroleum-derived product; therefore, its price is highly volatile and correlated with crude oil and benzene markets. B2B buyers should consider long-term supply contracts with price indexing or purchase in bulk during market dips to hedge against sudden price surges.

Polystyrene resins (especially EPS) are sensitive to high temperatures and static electricity. Ensure the cargo is stored in a cool, well-ventilated environment away from ignition sources. For sea freight, use moisture-proof lining in containers to prevent clumping or degradation of the resin pellets during transit.

Prioritize Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site inspections by third-party agencies like SGS or Intertek. Review their Business License, Export License, and ISO 9001 certification. Requesting a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) is a critical safeguard to ensure the material loaded matches the approved sample specifications.

Check for Anti-Dumping Duties (ADD) that your specific country may impose on Polystyrene originating from certain regions. Always verify the HS Code (typically 3903.11 or 3903.19) with your customs broker to calculate accurate import tariffs and ensure all Certificate of Origin documents are prepared to leverage applicable Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
