Ensure the supplier provides a sizing chart based on your specific pool volume (gallons or cubic meters) and desired temperature rise per hour.

Corrosion is the primary cause of heater failure. For standard chlorinated pools, Incoloy 825 or Stainless Steel 316L heating elements are recommended. However, for saltwater pools (salt chlorine generators), you must insist on Titanium heating elements, as they are virtually immune to salt corrosion. The outer casing should ideally be IPX4 rated waterproof and made of UV-resistant ABS or powder-coated galvanized steel.

Electrical safety is paramount. Ensure the product carries CE (Europe), UL (North America), or SAA (Australia) certifications. Key internal safety features must include an integrated flow switch (to prevent dry firing), a high-limit manual reset thermostat (overheat protection), and RCD/GFCI compatibility to prevent electrical leakage into the pool water.

Every heater has a minimum and maximum flow rate requirement. If the flow is too slow, the unit will overheat and trip the safety sensors; if too fast, the water won't stay in contact with the element long enough to heat effectively. Verify that the heater’s connection size (e.g., 1.5 inch or 50mm) matches your existing pump system and consider a bypass valve manifold to regulate flow precisely.

The biggest risks are voltage incompatibility and frequency mismatches. Ensure the supplier customizes the unit for your target market (e.g., 220-240V/50Hz for Europe/UK vs. 110V or 240V/60Hz for North America). Additionally, shipping damage to heating elements is common; require reinforced plywood packaging rather than standard cardboard for bulk sea freight.

Prioritize Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site inspections by third-party agencies like SGS or Intertek. Check their Business Type (Manufacturer vs. Trading Company) and look for a history of exporting to high-standard markets. Request a video walk-through of their testing lab to see if they perform 100% dielectric strength and leakage current tests before packing.

Focus on spare parts and warranty terms rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for a 1-2% FOC (Free of Charge) spare parts kit including sensors, contactors, and heating elements. Since these are seasonal items, negotiate staggered production schedules to ensure stock arrives just before the spring peak season, and use Trade Assurance to lock in lead times.

Pool heaters are heavy and contain sensitive electronics. Use Sea Freight (LCL or FCL) for cost-efficiency, but ensure the Incoterms are clearly defined—FOB (Free on Board) is generally preferred for B2B buyers to maintain control over shipping costs. Ensure the supplier provides a HS Code (typically 851610) to accurately calculate import duties and VAT in your destination country.
