The biggest risk is material misrepresentation or contamination, where the core of a bale contains lower-quality waste. To mitigate this, never pay 100% upfront. Use Trade Terms that include inspection-linked payments. Another risk is regulatory seizure at customs due to improper waste classification; always ensure the Harmonized System (HS) Codes (typically under Chapter 3915) are accurately declared and match the import permits of the destination country.

Focus negotiations on long-term supply stability rather than just the lowest spot price, as the recycled market is volatile. Ask for tiered pricing based on purity levels and negotiate a claims clause that defines the compensation process if the contamination rate exceeds the agreed percentage. For large volumes, request FOB (Free On Board) terms to maintain control over shipping costs and avoid hidden 'destination charges' often found in CIF terms.

Scrap plastics, especially flakes and regrinds, should be packed in heavy-duty jumbo bags (FIBC) with liners to prevent moisture ingress. Ensure the shipping documents clearly state the material is 'Secondary Raw Material' rather than 'Waste' where applicable, to facilitate smoother customs clearance. Verify if the destination port requires a Radiation Detection Certificate, which is common for recycled bulk commodities.
