Performance is heavily dependent on the ballast compatibility; using an mismatched ballast can lead to 'cycling' (turning on and off repeatedly) and premature failure. Buyers should prioritize lamps with reinforced arc tubes and ensure the operating position (universal, horizontal, or vertical) matches the fixture design.

Sodium vapor lights have excellent lumen maintenance, often retaining 90% of their initial light output over their lifespan. While LEDs are more energy-efficient, HPS remains a cost-effective solution for large-scale agricultural (grow lights) and municipal projects due to lower initial procurement costs and high penetration in foggy or dusty environments.
