Spices are highly sensitive to environmental factors. You must prioritize materials with high barrier properties against moisture, oxygen, and UV light to prevent clumping and loss of aroma. For shaker bottles, verify the sifter fitment (hole size) matches the spice density (e.g., fine powder vs. coarse flakes). If using pouches, a transparent window can be added, but it must be UV-coated to prevent the spice colors from fading under retail lighting.

Use Rotogravure printing for large volume orders (10,000+ units) to achieve the best color accuracy, or Digital printing for low MOQ private labels. Ensure all inks used are food-safe and low-migration. Compliance-wise, the packaging must support clear labeling for country of origin, net weight, and allergen warnings as per international food labeling regulations.

Request a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) and third-party lab test reports (SGS or TUV) specifically for heavy metals and phthalates. Before mass production, ask the supplier to perform a migration test using a food simulant that matches the acidity or oil content of your specific spices.

Focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for free cylinder/plate making for long-term contracts or repeat orders. Ask for a 5-10% over-run allowance where you only pay for the actual quantity produced, and always clarify the incoterms (FOB vs CIF) to avoid hidden port charges.

Packaging materials, especially empty pouches or tins, are prone to crushing. Insist on heavy-duty double-corrugated export cartons and palletization with stretch wrap. For sea freight, ensure the use of desiccant bags inside the container to prevent 'container rain' which can cause mold on paper-based packaging or oxidation on metal components.
