The surface finish should be pickled and passivated to restore the chromium oxide protective layer. Additionally, ensure the design includes an overflow gutter system and integrated recirculation inlets that are seamlessly welded to the shell to prevent stagnant water zones.

While the initial capital expenditure (CAPEX) for stainless steel is 20-30% higher than concrete, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is lower. This is due to minimal maintenance requirements, a lifespan exceeding 40 years, and the fact that stainless steel is 100% recyclable, providing residual value at the end of its life cycle.

The biggest risk is logistical damage and surface contamination. If stainless steel comes into contact with carbon steel tools or dust during transit, it will develop surface rust. Ensure the contract specifies protective film coating and seaworthy wooden crate packaging to prevent iron contamination and physical denting during sea freight.

Request a Material Test Report (MTR) for every batch of steel used. Negotiate a retention payment (typically 5-10%) to be released only after a successful hydrostatic leak test is performed on-site.
