The most critical factor is the grade of stainless steel used. Grade 304 is the industry standard for superior corrosion resistance and durability, especially in humid or coastal environments. Grade 430 is a more cost-effective alternative but is magnetic and less resistant to rust. Ensure the gauge thickness is at least 18 to 20 gauge for the body and 14 to 16 gauge for the frame to prevent warping under heavy tool loads.

Check for heavy-duty ball-bearing slides with a rated capacity of at least 100 lbs (45kg) per drawer. For larger bottom drawers intended for power tools, look for double-slide configurations that can handle 200 lbs or more. Additionally, ensure the drawers feature a self-closing or 'stay-shut' mechanism to prevent accidental opening during movement.

For the North American market, look for ANSI/BIFMA standards for durability and safety. If the unit includes integrated power strips or USB ports, they must be UL or ETL certified to ensure electrical safety. For European markets, CE marking and GS certification are essential indicators of mechanical safety and quality control.

The chest should be equipped with heavy-duty polyurethane casters (typically 5x2 inches) with a total load rating exceeding the chest's maximum capacity. At least two casters must have locking swivels. Look for tubular stainless steel side handles that are bolted through the frame rather than just riveted, ensuring they can withstand the force of a fully loaded cabinet.

Stainless steel is prone to denting and scratching. Insist on ISTA 3A or 6-Amazon.com packaging standards, which include reinforced honeycomb corner protectors, double-wall corrugated boxes, and a wooden pallet base. Request that the supplier applies a protective PE film on all stainless surfaces to prevent abrasions during assembly and transit.

Focus on the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the unit price. Negotiate based on material weight and steel grade transparency. Ask for a breakdown of the stainless steel weight to ensure they aren't thinning the gauge to lower costs. For bulk orders, aim for a 10-15% discount or request free spare parts like extra drawer liners and replacement lock cylinders.

Request a Material Test Report (MTR) or a Mill Test Certificate to verify the chemical composition (Nickel and Chromium levels). You can also hire a third-party inspection service to perform a salt spray test (typically 24-72 hours) or a spot chemical test during the pre-shipment inspection to confirm it is truly Grade 304 and not a lower-quality alloy.

Due to the high weight-to-volume ratio, LCL (Less than Container Load) shipping can be expensive due to 'heavy cargo' surcharges. It is often more economical to ship via FCL (Full Container Load). Ensure the supplier uses fumigated wooden pallets or plastic pallets to comply with international ISPM 15 standards to avoid customs delays.
