For residential indoor stairs, Glazed Ceramic or Polished Porcelain offers a wide variety of aesthetic designs. For outdoor stairs, prioritize Natural Stone (Granite/Slate) or Anti-slip Porcelain with a high R-rating (R11 or higher) to withstand weathering and prevent slips.

Safety is the primary function. Ensure the tiles have Anti-slip Grooves (Nosing) or a Bullnose Edge to provide better grip and reduce the risk of tripping. Additionally, check the PEI Rating (Class 4 or 5) for abrasion resistance and the Water Absorption Rate (less than 0.5% for porcelain) to ensure the tiles do not crack in freezing temperatures or humid conditions.

Buyers should request ISO 10545 test reports covering dimensions, water absorption, and breaking strength. For the US market, ensure compliance with ANSI A137.1 (DCOF - Dynamic Coefficient of Friction), requiring a value >0.42 for wet level floors. For European markets, look for the CE Marking and EN 14411 standards to ensure the product meets health, safety, and environmental protection requirements.

Confirm the Dimensional Calibration of the tiles; a variance of more than ±0.5mm can lead to uneven steps. Request Integrated Step Tiles (where the tread and riser are one piece or pre-cut) to reduce labor costs and ensure a seamless look. Always verify if the supplier provides matching corner pieces and skirting tiles to maintain design consistency across the entire staircase.

The biggest risks are breakage during transit and high shipping costs due to weight. To mitigate this, insist on Palletized Packaging with Corner Protectors and Shrink Wrapping. Ensure the supplier uses Fumigated Wooden Pallets to comply with international shipping regulations and avoid customs delays.

Focus on the Total Landed Cost rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for Free Samples (you pay shipping) to verify the anti-slip texture. For orders exceeding one 20ft container, ask for a 5-10% volume discount or request customized packaging with your brand logo at no extra cost.

Always use Secure Payment Terms such as Letter of Credit (L/C) or Escrow services provided by reputable platforms. Conduct a Third-Party Pre-shipment Inspection (PSI) to verify the quantity, color shade consistency (batch coding), and breakage rate before the final payment is released.

Since tiles are heavy, Sea Freight (FCL - Full Container Load) is the most economical method. Try to optimize the load to the maximum weight limit of a 20ft container (usually 21-27 tons depending on the destination country's road limits) to lower the per-unit shipping cost. Ensure the Incoterms are clearly defined, preferably FOB (Free On Board), to maintain control over the logistics chain.
