High-quality steel poles should feature automatic submerged arc welding for a smooth, continuous seam. Inspect the base plate welding specifically, as this is a common failure point. The finish should be free of zinc burrs, dross, or 'white rust'. For aesthetic projects, specify the RAL color code for powder coating and ensure a minimum thickness of 60-80 microns.

The biggest risks are physical damage during transit (bending or surface scratches) and anti-dumping duties. Focus on the zinc coating weight (g/m²) and steel grade transparency rather than just the lowest price.
