If purchasing a floating water sphere (Kugel ball), precision is critical. The sphere must be perfectly calibrated to a tolerance of less than 0.1mm to ensure smooth rotation. Ask the supplier for CNC machining reports and videos demonstrating the hydrostatic balance. The socket must be carved from the same stone block or a compatible material to ensure a perfect seal and uniform thermal expansion.

Check for ASTM or EN standards regarding water absorption and compressive strength. Surface finishes range from high-gloss polishing (up to 3000 grit) to honed or tumbled textures. For spheres used in high-traffic areas, ensure a penetrating sealer (impregnator) has been applied to prevent staining and oil absorption, especially for porous stones like sandstone or light marble.

For spheres exceeding 50cm in diameter, structural integrity is a safety priority. Request a Certificate of Origin and a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to ensure no hazardous radiation levels (common in some natural granites). If the sphere is part of a public installation, verify compliance with local building codes regarding load-bearing foundations and anti-topple anchoring systems.

Stone spheres are heavy yet brittle. Insist on IPPC-certified solid wood crating with internal shock-absorbing foam or rubber padding. For large orders, use reinforced steel strapping to prevent movement within the container. It is highly recommended to purchase All-Risk Marine Insurance and request loading photos from the supplier before the container is sealed.

Focus on Total Landed Cost rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for free spare parts (such as water pumps or LED lights for fountain spheres) and a quality guarantee period of at least 2 years. For bulk orders, request a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) by a third party like SGS or Intertek to verify dimensions and stone grade before final payment.

Verify the HS Code (typically 6802 for worked monumental or building stone) to determine import duties in your country. Be aware of anti-dumping duties that some regions (like the EU or USA) may apply to specific stone products from certain origins. Ensure all Fumigation Certificates are provided to avoid customs delays or rejection at the port of entry.

Due to the high weight-to-volume ratio, Sea Freight (FCL - Full Container Load) is the most economical option. If purchasing multiple spheres, try to reach a 20ft container weight limit (approx. 21-27 tons) to optimize freight costs. For smaller quantities, LCL (Less than Container Load) is possible, but ensure the 'Heavy Cargo' surcharge is clarified upfront.
