Always verify the fabric weight, usually measured in ounces (oz); 10-12 oz is standard for year-round retail, while over 13 oz is considered heavy-duty.

You must prioritize suppliers who provide OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification to ensure the fabric is free from harmful chemicals, especially regarding azo dyes and formaldehyde used in the dyeing process. For the US market, ensure compliance with CPSIA (especially for children's denim), and for the EU, verify REACH regulation adherence. Additionally, request Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certificates if you are sourcing 'eco-friendly' denim made from recycled polyester or cotton.

Focus on seam strength and stitch density; a minimum of 8-10 stitches per inch is recommended for durability. Check for reinforced bar-tacking at stress points like pocket corners and the crotch area. For stretch fabrics, the recovery rate is essential—the fabric should return to its original shape after being stretched. Request a shrinkage test report, as stretch denim often has a higher shrinkage rate (3-5%) than 100% cotton denim due to the heat sensitivity of elastane.

Modern sourcing favors sustainable finishing. Ask if the supplier uses Laser Technology for whiskering, Ozone washing to reduce water consumption, or Enzyme washes instead of traditional stone washing which can damage stretch fibers. Ensure the colorfastness to rubbing (crocking) meets a minimum Grade 3-4 on the grey scale to prevent dye transfer to the end-user's skin or furniture.

The primary risk is 'Shade Banding' or color inconsistency between production batches. To mitigate this, require a Top of Production (TOP) sample for approval before the bulk shipment leaves the factory. Another risk is elasticity degradation due to improper storage or high-heat processing; ensure your contract specifies that no high-heat drying was used during the finishing process, as this 'kills' the stretch.

Denim production is volume-sensitive due to the dyeing vats' capacity. Negotiate based on fabric commonality; if you use the same fabric for multiple styles, you can often lower the MOQ per style. Aim for a tiered pricing structure where costs drop by 5-10% when moving from 500 pieces to 2,000 pieces. Always clarify if the quoted price is FOB (Free On Board), which is standard for apparel, giving you control over the shipping logistics.

Always utilize secure payment terms such as Letters of Credit (L/C) for large volumes or Escrow-based services provided by reputable platforms. Never pay 100% upfront; a standard 30% deposit and 70% balance against the Bill of Lading (B/L) is the industry norm. Conduct a third-party pre-shipment inspection (PSI) to verify quantity and quality before the final payment is released.

For bulk orders (over 500kg), Sea Freight (LCL or FCL) is the most economical. However, for 'fast fashion' cycles, consider Sea-Air combined transport to balance cost and speed. Ensure the supplier uses moisture-absorbent silica gel packets in every carton and heavy-duty polybags to prevent mildew during long transit times across different climate zones.
