Wicks should be lead-free (cotton or paper core) to comply with international safety standards. For clear holders, polycarbonate (plastic) cups are preferred as they stay cool to the touch and showcase the wax color, while aluminum cups are the industry standard for heat conductivity and fire safety.

To avoid customs seizures and legal liability, products must adhere to specific safety standards. In the EU, candles should comply with EN 15493 (Fire Safety), EN 15426 (Sooting Behavior), and EN 15494 (Safety Labels). For the US market, adherence to ASTM F2417 is mandatory. Ensure the supplier provides SDS (Safety Data Sheets) and REACH certification if selling in Europe to verify the absence of harmful chemicals.

Request a burn test report from the supplier. A quality tealight should have a stable, non-flickering flame, leave minimal residual wax (less than 5%), and produce no visible black smoke. For scented tealights, verify the fragrance load (typically 3-5%) to ensure the scent remains consistent throughout the entire burn duration. Always request pre-production samples to test the actual burn time against the advertised specifications.

The biggest risks are melting during transit and fragile packaging. Tealights shipped through tropical zones or stored in hot containers can deform. Ensure the supplier uses reinforced 5-layer corrugated boxes and considers temperature-controlled shipping or avoids shipping during peak summer months. Additionally, verify the Anti-Dumping Duties (ADD); for example, some regions impose high taxes on paraffin candles from specific countries.

Focus on tiered pricing and packaging customization. Since tealights are low-value, high-volume items, shipping costs significantly impact the unit price. Negotiate for FOB (Free On Board) terms to control your logistics costs. Ask for OEM branding on the packaging, as private labeling is highly effective for this category. Request a discount of 10-15% for orders exceeding 50,000 units, as economies of scale are significant in wax pressing.

Always use secure payment methods provided by the platform to protect your funds until delivery. Conduct a factory audit or hire a third-party inspection service like SGS or Intertek to verify the supplier's production capacity and social compliance (e.g., BSCI). Ensure the Proforma Invoice (PI) clearly states the wax type, burn time, and weight per piece to prevent 'quality fade' between the sample and the bulk order.
