The choice of underlayment depends heavily on the primary flooring material. For Laminate and LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank), prioritize high-density foam or IXPE with a thickness of 1mm to 3mm to prevent joint failure. For Hardwood, look for cushioning and moisture-regulating materials like felt or cork. Key metrics include the Compression Strength (CS), which should be ≥60 kPa for click-system floors to prevent cracking, and the Sound Transmission Class (STC) / Impact Insulation Class (IIC) ratings, where a score of 70 or higher is ideal for multi-story commercial or residential projects.

The primary risk is material substitution, where a supplier may use lower-density recycled foam instead of virgin materials to cut costs. To mitigate this, request a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and a pre-shipment sample from the actual production batch. Another risk is volume-to-weight discrepancies in shipping; since underlayment is lightweight but bulky, ensure your freight forwarder calculates Volumetric Weight accurately to avoid unexpected surcharges.

Focus on Tiered Pricing based on container loads (e.g., 20GP vs. 40HQ) rather than just unit price. Ask for OEM/Private Labeling services, such as printing your brand logo on the vapor barrier film, which adds significant value for a low cost. Negotiate a Quality Retention Payment (e.g., 5-10% held until 30 days after arrival) to ensure the goods match the agreed specifications upon inspection.

Underlayment is susceptible to edge damage and moisture during transit. Insist on heavy-duty shrink wrapping and the use of pallets for LCL shipments to prevent crushing. For FCL (Full Container Load), ensure the supplier uses desiccants inside the container to prevent 'container rain' which can degrade the adhesive strips or paper-based underlayments during long sea voyages.
