For the US market, products must adhere to ASTM F963 and possess a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) based on testing from a CPSC-accepted lab. For the EU, the EN71 series (Parts 1, 2, and 3) and the CE Mark are mandatory. Additionally, ensure all materials are BPA-free, lead-free, and phthalate-free to meet REACH or CPSIA requirements.

When sourcing 'unique' toys, you must verify if the design is patented or trademarked by the supplier to avoid IP infringement. Ask for Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) capabilities and request design patent certificates. If you are developing a custom toy, ensure a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) is signed before sharing sketches, and confirm the supplier has experience with 3D prototyping and mold development.

For premium toys, prioritize food-grade silicone, FSC-certified sustainable wood, or high-impact ABS plastic. If the toy includes electronics, ensure the battery compartment is secured with screws to prevent choking hazards. For plush toys, check the GSM (grams per square meter) of the fabric and ensure double-stitched seams to pass tension tests.

Unique toys often have complex mechanisms. You should request Small Parts Cylinder tests (to prevent choking), Drop Tests (usually from 3 feet to ensure structural integrity), and Torque/Tension tests for movable parts. For electronic toys, verify EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) to ensure the toy doesn't interfere with other devices.

Never skip the Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI). Hire a third-party agency to perform an AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) inspection focusing on aesthetics, functionality, and safety. Use Secure Payment terms (such as those offered on Made-in-China.com) to ensure funds are only released once the shipping documents are verified.

Focus on Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) vs. Mold Costs. Many suppliers will offer a lower unit price if you pay the mold fee upfront, or they may refund the mold fee once your cumulative order reaches a certain volume (e.g., 5,000 units). Always request a Golden Sample (final approved version) to serve as the benchmark for mass production.

Toys with lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods and require a UN38.3 Test Report and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for air freight. For toys with strong magnets, ensure they meet size and strength regulations to avoid customs seizures. Work with a freight forwarder experienced in DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) terms to simplify the tax and duty process in your home country.

Look for the 'Audited Supplier' badge, which indicates the supplier has been verified by third-party institutions like SGS or Bureau Veritas. Check their Trust Points, years in business, and export experience to your specific region. Reviewing their Factory Audit Report will give you insights into their production capacity and social responsibility compliance (e.g., BSCI or ICTI).
