For Urea, ensure a Nitrogen content of at least 46% with a Biuret content below 1.0% to prevent crop toxicity. For DAP, the standard grade is 18-46-0 (18% Nitrogen, 46% Phosphorus). You must verify the moisture content (typically <1.0%) and granule size (2-4mm for 90% of the product) to ensure compatibility with mechanical spreaders and prevent caking during transit.

Suppliers should provide ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental standards. It is critical to request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a reputable third-party inspector like SGS or Intertek. For specific markets, ensure compliance with regional regulations such as the EU Fertilizer Regulation (2019/1009) or FCO (Fertiliser Control Order) for the Indian market.

Urea is highly water-soluble but requires soil urease enzymes to convert to ammonia, making it sensitive to temperature. DAP provides a temporary alkaline pH around the granule, which is excellent for phosphorus uptake in acidic soils but can cause seed burn if placed too close to the plant. Buyers should confirm the water-solubility percentage of P2O5 in DAP, which should be above 90% for high-grade products.

Fertilizers are hygroscopic (absorb moisture). Use 50kg PP/PE woven bags with an inner PE liner or 1000kg/1200kg Jumbo bags (FIBC) with UV protection. Ensure the bags are seaworthy and clearly labeled with nutrient analysis, net weight, and country of origin to meet customs requirements.

The fertilizer market is highly sensitive to natural gas prices and export policies (e.g., China's CIQ inspections). We recommend using Short-term Fixed Price Contracts for immediate needs or Formula-based Pricing for long-term supply. Always check the latest export quota policies from the origin country to avoid shipment delays at the port.

Given the high value of bulk fertilizer shipments, use Irrevocable Letter of Credit (L/C at sight) or Trade Assurance services. Avoid 100% T/T upfront. A common safe structure is 30% deposit and 70% against the Bill of Lading (B/L) after a successful SGS pre-shipment inspection at the loading port.

For large volumes (over 3,000 tons), Bulk Carriers are most economical, but for smaller B2B orders, Containerized Shipping (FCL) is safer to prevent cross-contamination. Ensure the shipping line provides Free Time at Destination (14-21 days) to allow for customs clearance and inland transport without incurring heavy demurrage charges.

Prioritize Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site inspections. Look for companies with a Gold Member status and a history of exporting to your specific region. Review their export licenses for hazardous or regulated chemicals to ensure they have the legal authority to ship fertilizers internationally.
