Always ask for service logs to verify regular oil changes and winterization.

Inspect the hull for deep gouges or structural cracks, especially in the fiberglass or SMC (Sheet Molding Compound), as these can lead to water intake. For the propulsion system, examine the impeller and wear ring for nicks or erosion; a gap larger than 0.5mm between the impeller and the housing will significantly reduce performance. Ensure the reverse gate and steering cables move smoothly without binding, as cable replacement is labor-intensive.

Ensure the unit has a clear Hull Identification Number (HIN) that matches the ownership documents. For the European market, verify CE marking compliance. For the US, ensure the engine meets EPA emissions standards for the specific model year. You must obtain the Original Title or Certificate of Origin and a formal Bill of Sale to facilitate customs clearance and re-registration in the destination country.

Prioritize units used in freshwater, as saltwater causes accelerated corrosion of the engine block, electrical connectors, and cooling passages. Look for white powdery residue (salt corrosion) on the engine or green oxidation on wiring. If sourcing saltwater units, ensure they were equipped with a closed-loop cooling system (like Sea-Doo) or have evidence of consistent post-ride flushing.

The biggest risk is undisclosed mechanical failure or flood damage. Unlike new goods, used jet skis are often sold 'as-is'. To mitigate this, hire a third-party inspector to perform a physical check before final payment. Another risk is shipping damage; ensure the jet ski is secured on a heavy-duty crate or a galvanized trailer with the battery disconnected and fuel drained to meet IMO Dangerous Goods regulations.

Focus on transparency and bulk logistics. If purchasing multiple units, negotiate for container loading optimization to reduce per-unit shipping costs. Ask the supplier to provide video proof of a 'cold start' and a water test if possible. Request a pro-forma invoice that clearly breaks down the price of the unit versus the shipping and handling fees to avoid hidden 'port charges' upon arrival.

Always use secure payment methods provided by the platform to ensure your funds are protected until shipping documents are uploaded. For shipping, use CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) if you are a new buyer, but ensure the insurance policy covers 'Total Loss' and 'Partial Damage'. Given the high value and sensitivity of the electronics, specify shrink-wrapping for the units to protect them from salt air during sea transit.
