As food-contact surfaces, products must comply with FDA (U.S.) or LFGB (EU) standards. Specifically, the adhesives and mineral oils used must be food-grade and non-toxic. For shipments to the US, ensure compliance with California Proposition 65 regarding chemical migration. Additionally, check if the importing country requires a Phytosanitary Certificate to prove the wood is free from pests.

Request suppliers to provide boil test reports or perform a 24-hour water immersion test to ensure the waterproof glue (typically D3 or D4 grade) does not fail. The surface should be finished with food-grade mineral oil or beeswax; avoid boards with polyurethane or lacquer finishes which can chip into food. The surface smoothness should meet a sanding grit of at least 320 to ensure a premium tactile feel.

The biggest risk is moisture-induced mold or cracking caused by temperature fluctuations during sea freight. Buyers should insist on silica gel desiccant packets in every master carton and ensure the use of shrink-wrap packaging for individual units. Furthermore, verify that the supplier uses fumigated wooden pallets (ISPM 15 standard) to avoid customs delays or rejection at the port of entry.

Focus on tiered pricing based on volume; typically, a 1,000-unit order can yield a 15-20% discount compared to the sample price. Negotiate for OEM branding (laser engraving) to be included in the unit price for orders exceeding 500 pieces.
