What does an accuracy figure such as 3 percent H plus 2 um mean?

The error has a proportional part and a fixed part, so a gauge quoted as 3 percent plus 2 um allows about 5 um at 100 um and about 32 um at 1000 um, while a tighter gauge quoted as 2 percent plus 0.3 um allows about 2.3 um at 100 um. The fixed term dominates on thin coatings and the proportional term on thick ones, so the figure must be read together with the thickness range.
