What does an accuracy figure such as 3 percent H plus 2 um mean?

The error has a proportional part and a fixed part, so a gauge quoted as 3 percent plus 2 um allows about 5 um at 100 um and about 32 um at 1000 um, while a tighter gauge quoted as 2 percent plus 0.3 um allows about 2.3 um at 100 um. The fixed term dominates on thin coatings and the proportional term on thick ones, so the figure must be read together with the thickness range.

How does the instrument measure coating thickness without damaging the coating?

The probe generates a magnetic field or an eddy current in the substrate and measures how the field is affected by the distance between the probe and the metal. Because the coating is non magnetic and non conductive, that distance is the coating thickness. The method is non destructive and gives a reading in under a second.

Can the gauge measure on a curved or hot surface?

Curvature down to a stated radius is acceptable, and beyond that a reading should be corrected or the part supported. Very hot surfaces are not suitable for most models because the probe and the electronics have a working temperature limit.

Why do I get different values at different points on the same panel?

Paint thickness genuinely varies across a panel, especially on curved areas, edges and repaired zones. Measure at least five points, take upper, lower, left, right and centre positions, and use the average. Avoid measuring within a few millimetres of an edge, a weld or a sharp curve, where the geometry distorts the field.

Hold the host where you can read it, guide the small probe into the frame with the cable, and press the probe flat against the surface. Keep the cable away from sharp edges, and take three readings along the member because the coating thickness varies at welds and corners.
