Wholesale agar-agar powder manufacturers

When sourcing Agar-agar, the most critical metric is Gel Strength (measured in g/cm²). For food and industrial applications, standard strengths range from 700 to 1200 g/cm². You must also verify the particle size (mesh count); a finer powder (80-100 mesh) dissolves more easily. Ensure the moisture content is below 15% and ash content is below 5% to guarantee purity and a longer shelf life.

As a food additive (E406), the supplier must provide ISO 22000 or HACCP certifications to ensure food safety management. For international trade, Halal and Kosher certifications are often mandatory to cater to diverse global markets. Additionally, request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch to confirm it meets FCC (Food Chemicals Codex) or USP (United States Pharmacopeia) standards regarding heavy metal limits (e.g., Lead <5ppm).

Agar-agar is categorized by its application: Food Grade is used as a gelling agent in confectionery, dairy, and bakery products; Pharmaceutical Grade acts as an excipient or laxative; and Microbiological Grade (Bacteriological) is used for culture media. Ensure you specify the solubility temperature (typically dissolves at 85-95°C) and gelation temperature (32-45°C) based on your specific manufacturing process.

To maximize value, consider the source of the raw material (Gracilaria vs. Gelidium seaweed); Gracilaria-based agar is generally more cost-effective for food use. Bulk discounts typically trigger at 1,000kg (1 metric ton), where prices can drop by 15-20% compared to smaller LCL orders. Always factor in the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), including specialized packaging like moisture-proof 25kg kraft bags with PE liners to prevent clumping during transit.

The primary risk is adulteration or 'strength padding', where suppliers mix lower-grade starch to reduce costs. To mitigate this, use third-party inspection services (like SGS or Intertek) to test gel strength before final payment. Another risk is moisture damage during sea freight; ensure the contract specifies hermetic sealing and the use of desiccants inside the shipping container.

Focus on long-term volume commitments rather than one-off spot buys to secure stable pricing, as seaweed harvest yields can fluctuate. Request tiered pricing based on gel strength variations. On platforms like Made-in-China.com, prioritize Diamond Members or Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site factory verifications to ensure they are actual manufacturers and not middle-men.

Agar-agar is sensitive to extreme humidity. Specify 'Cool and Dry' storage conditions on the Bill of Lading. For shipping to the US or EU, ensure the HS Code (1302.31) is correctly declared to avoid customs delays. If purchasing from China, leverage FOB (Free On Board) terms if you have a reliable freight forwarder, or CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) if you prefer the supplier to handle the risk until the destination port.

Always use secure payment methods such as Letters of Credit (L/C) for large volumes or Escrow-based trade terms provided by reputable B2B platforms. Never wire full payments to private bank accounts. Ensure the Sales Confirmation (SC) includes a detailed dispute resolution clause and clearly defines the sampling protocol for quality disputes.
