Additionally, verify the ballast system efficiency to ensure stability during loading and unloading operations.

The barge must be built and certified by a recognized Classification Society such as ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), LR (Lloyd's Register), or CCS (China Classification Society). Ensure the vessel complies with MARPOL for environmental protection and SOLAS for safety of life at sea. For international transit, a Load Line Certificate and International Tonnage Certificate are essential.

To minimize maintenance costs, specify marine-grade epoxy coatings with a thickness of at least 300-400 microns and the installation of sacrificial zinc anodes for cathodic protection against corrosion. Using DH36 or EH36 grade steel in high-stress areas can significantly extend the vessel's lifespan in harsh saltwater environments.

If the barge is intended for Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) operations, ensure it has a reinforced bow or stern ramp. For offshore construction, look for integrated spud wells for anchoring and heavy-duty bollards (e.g., 30-50 tons) for secure towing. Manhole covers should be flush-mounted to prevent damage to rolling cargo.

Utilize Escrow services or Letters of Credit (L/C) to ensure payment is only released upon reaching specific milestones, such as keel laying, launching, and final sea trials. Always conduct a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) by a third-party surveyor like SGS or Intertek to verify that the build matches the agreed-upon blueprints.

Focus on Total Contract Value rather than just the unit price. Negotiate for extended warranty periods (e.g., 24 months) on the hull structure and the inclusion of spare parts kits (anodes, manhole seals). Requesting a detailed production schedule as part of the contract allows you to hold the supplier accountable for delivery delays.

Barges are typically delivered via Wet Towage (towed by a tugboat) or Dry Carriage (loaded onto a Semi-Submersible Heavy Lift Vessel). While dry carriage is faster and safer for the hull, wet towage is often more cost-effective for shorter distances. Ensure the supplier provides a Towage Approval Certificate before the vessel leaves the yard.

Verify the import duties and Cabotage laws of the destination country (e.g., the Jones Act in the U.S. or similar domestic trade restrictions). Ensure the supplier provides a Builder's Certificate and a Deletion Certificate (if the vessel was previously registered) to facilitate smooth customs clearance and new flag registration.
