Q:What is the principle of HVOF?

Oxygen and fuel combust in a combustion chamber, producing high-temperature, high-pressure gas. The gas accelerates through a Laval (convergent-divergent) nozzle into a supersonic jet. Powder is fed by a carrier gas (e.g. nitrogen) into the jet, where it is heated and accelerated. High-velocity particles impact the substrate and undergo plastic deformation, forming intimate mechanical interlocking with the substrate, with splat layers building up into a dense coating.

Q:What materials can be sprayed?

- Tungsten carbide WC/Co: first choice for wear protection up to about 1000 F (approximately 540 C); - Chromium carbide Cr3C2/NiCr: for high-temperature (above 1000 F) or combined wear + corrosion; - WC/Ni: wear resistance plus additional corrosion resistance; - Nickel-based and cobalt-based alloys, Fe-based amorphous (metallic glass), high-entropy alloys, etc.
