Naphthol AS-G is a bis-functional coupling component with a unique bis-acetoacetylated biphenyl structure, whereas most other AS series products are mono-functional naphthol derivatives. This structure enables the synthesis of disazo diarylide pigments with superior thermal stability---offering a 50 degrees C heat stability advantage over mono-functional derivatives. It produces yellow to orange shades, while other AS products typically produce red, maroon, or blue shades.

Main applications include cotton yarn and fabric dyeing and printing, viscose, silk, nylon, and acetate fiber dyeing. It is also used as a priming agent for cotton fiber dyeing and as an intermediate in the manufacture of organic pigments.

When combined with various fast color bases, Naphthol AS-G produces bright shades ranging from lemon yellow to orange and dark burgundies. It offers good light fastness (4-5) and oxygen bleaching fastness (4-5), making it reliable for demanding textile applications including African wax prints.

Naphthol AS-G is a key intermediate for the synthesis of diarylide pigments including Pigment Yellow 16 (PY16) and Pigment Yellow 77 (PY77). Its bis-functional acetoacetyl architecture enables the formation of disazo pigments with enhanced thermal stability, making them essential for engineering plastics and powder coatings.
